Cyberware Degredation
How many times has that been ripped...?

The changes to cyberware ripping are pretty awesome and have introduced a lot of new potential RP for both amateur and pro cyberdocs.

Because of how useful this mechanic is however, it seems like cyberware can basically remain in the game forever as long as someone takes the time to save the corpse of its owner. I imagine this leads to some DB bloat and also discourages people from buying the product brand new (either retail or more other means).

I think it would be interesting (and also realistic) if cyberware degraded each time it was ripped out of a corpse.Skilled docs would obviously cause less degradation when doing the extraction, and when the piece of cyberware's durability reaches zero, it would crumble into dust when removed. (or simply not show up as a removable item)

Bonus points if the cyberware's worsening durability score adds extra PDS load, which would also make people think twice before skimping on dumpster chrome.

Thoughts?

There's an equivalent of this mechanic already.

This is functionally not needed with the mechanics as they are in place, and actually stifles RP, in that it encourages interacting with a vending machine more than other players to source chrome.

I personally love this idea. It gives ripper docs wildly different playing fields compared to each other which is needed. As it is if you can do it reasonably, you are basically on the same level as someone who has put down 7x the effort, so it makes the better docs more expensive and reliable and the lesser ones cheaper but good in a pinch.
@Rhea

I disagree.

The market for used chrome would still be there, people would just start charging accordingly depending on how bad of shape it is in, ideally. Would a cyber-eye really be able to be extracted from a corpse twenty times and still be usable? Maybe if you are lucky and have a premium doc on tap.

"...it makes the better docs more expensive and reliable and the lesser ones cheaper but good in a pinch."

That's not how player economics work in this game. The better docs will probably end up charging the exact same price for the service even if they have other forms of income.

@Something_Wicked

You misunderstand what I said completely. As it is, there is no reason to go to anyone but basic doctors because they are all on an even playing field. It is the same logic of going to a better decker to get better nodes, go to a better doc to ensure none of your stuff gets ruined. The economics are already in the game.

You would have hated the old mechanic then.

Anyway, the database consequence is basically imaginary. And the other consequences are working as designed - some people buy brand new, some people don't, and it's been that way ever since corpses started dropping cyberware. If anything, the new rip mechanics have already led to the benefits you're asking for.
