Economy Exhaustion
A plea

I admit to being absolutely exhausted with economic stuff. My character is not on the take, and I didn't take on skills to craft things or trade. My bad.

What I've run into:
- Oldbies you never see who, probably could do cool stuff but don't.
- Connected people who spend more time not connecting and not training anyone to be under them.
- People with access to stuff players spend years getting, and then never using it, training someone else to use it, or otherwise.
- Stock for some stores that would have items needed for crafting not rotating in, or the store just never seems to rotate, but also the cost is so prohibitive that you're back to waiting on connected players to do literally the most minor thing to move things along and get those items instead. And that's if you can even get into the circle.
- Ways to get into some higher expense stuff without actually spending the chy to do it being locked behind, again, bad connected players or chy.
- For Mixers, the cost to do anything massively outweighs any pay.

Let's do math for a Mixer trying to actively RP like a person and not like a standing block that just uses "say."
- Cube rent 1,050
- Extortion potentially 3,000 if you can't RP your way out of it, which is also based on the extorter not needing your flash
- Alcohol and food to go be social and meet people and tip your PC bartenders/dancers/other workers: I'll say 1000 a week.

We're already easily at 5k a week on just the most basic of RP. If you RP more or try to give more people RP for running or otherwise, you easily outpace that. If you're tired of living in a pile of your junk and constantly having to use count on your collected jackel pipes, now you're looking at an apartment.

Want to use CC and add keys? SIC bill just added 3k to that week. Friend get their keys stolen and now you have to rotate any you share? Fuck any money you made in the slightest. I think the cost for SIC was intended to push people towards other communication options.

Want to switch to using Progias? Minutes cost too. Friend a slow RPer that takes many minutes to respond?

What about radio? Oh right, securing is expensive and the handset or helmet is too.

Grid? Terms get stolen, keys get stolen, the grid isn't super friendly. Tons of dead nodes, a lot more niche for a lot of players. I still run into many months-old players that don't even know how to view a node.

Now, if you don't play SD as a second job and don't hit your max in side income from NPCs, you are broke as shit constantly because your income from your job, which you might actually spend a lot of time doing, is not even 5k.

Want to throw RP to your local vehicle player? With what flash? Want to get the tools to do something else? No social RP this week for you.

I know that's just an entire thing of complaints, but I've been absolutely crushing ideas trying to see a way out with skills or otherwise to achieve things most people look for, like getting some chrome, having a vehicle, getting some gear, and actually putting money towards people to do stuff for you so you spread the flash. Personally, I have spent to the detriment of my own character to try and boost others' RP because I see it as important to the story to make sure people don't feel so dead inside over income.

I see and have the exact same complaints frequently. Paying SIC bills constantly, just burning money that does not go back into any system players access; connected players being absent or having no drive to do the RP they may have spent years getting into; markets and stores with certain needed supplies for some crafts getting nothing.

I see the exact same stuff in the market constantly. The most exciting thing in the last month that changed was finding a new item that no one is buying because it's in the multiple 10ks, even with a skilled trader looking. And, it's not even a good item! I don't need 20 individual glasses of alcohol and nose rings with holes shot into them.

The junkyard has rooms that have nothing often, trash, or wildly expensive items. Building a vehicle from scratch in there would probably kill you from time before it panned out.

I know economy in every game is a balancing act and that we are playing on a tightrope in Cyberpunk of haves and have-nots. I definitely don't know the whole story and don't have answers. I've put some ideas to change below:

- Markets and junkyards need more randomly generated items put into them from many different options instead of how they populate currently. Traders need a reason to trade, even if it's not as a connected player going through other systems.

- Connected players should be heavily encouraged to make a certain quota of flash for their group. It doesn't need to be a second job, but just encouraging some of these people to RP for longer than five minutes and get faces running out to do biz for them, please. If you are one of these players, consider how annoying it would be to wait on someone for weeks to interact with you at all, and when you do interact, it's just for a few minutes. If you don't have time to be a connected player making the economy move, please bring people in for training.

- Store stock needs rotating. This is in another thread as well. You never see some items. My own character bought out a stock of one store's 3 of the same item weeks ago, and it has not restocked. I've been keeping track of store stock in many locations and seeing very few changes.

- Grid needs more of a tie to the economy. This has been in other threads as well. Transferring money with a term for goods and services would be awesome within limits. A decker putting a different SIC alias to skim off a transaction? Even better.

- Topside has an auction house for some reason. Was it intended to actually run auctions? Let's get some storage wars going.

- Either cut some costs of things by a percentage across the board or raise incomes by a percentage.

I'm aware I'm asking for a lot more coded changes than player ones. And that, with the limited coding availability, none of these have any likelihood of happening.

So, my final plea is just to players. If you have flash, spread it. If you are connected, get people in there, get them earning trust. Don't take skills you have no point taking just to avoid RP.

This is not an attempt by me to shit on the game. There are places that have people doing that enough. I'm in SD because I like SD in general. I came back to my character because I missed SD. But it's definitely different now. Hard in OOCly upsetting ways instead of thematically IC ones.

Thanks for coming to my MythTalk. All spelling errors trademarked by me. Please, I absolutely welcome other ideas for changes or changes to how players interact or just knowing others are out there spending a lot of time just to run head-on into the same roadblocks, and it's not just me being absolutely terrible.

There's nothing expensive about the junkyards compared to the actual retail or market costs.

There have never been this many vehicles in game, strictly because of how cheap the junkyards make every type vehicle that has a hulk. And that's only grown after the thirty-five percent price cuts that were given across the game awhile back.

Ironically vehicles being this cheap negatively impacts two other economic gameplay loops in the longrun.

"Connected players should be heavily encouraged to make a certain quota of flash for their group. If you are a connected player in an official faction group and you are not actively playing your role then that group is going to notice and course correct on you, so I disagree with slapping an minimal amount of chyen staple on a player like that. If they are doing their role correctly, odds are they are putting their organization first and making what they can while keeping their own heads above water. There are also more IC/OOC rules that they must abide by to fill that position. These rules limit them in a way of who they can prop up, supply, kill, whatever because without them there would be one fixer to rule them all and one solo to bind them. I do think one thing everyone at that level is susceptible to though is playing tower defense with their friends group. Everyone does it to some degree, and it leads to cycles of people saying that nobody is doing anything when everything is being done behind closed doors.

Firstly, I reject the idea that people who RP using 'say' are somehow less engaged or deserving of mockery. Not every post has to be you emoting your body movements or figuring out new formulations of '.nod at X', but I digress.

I do think there's a problem of an entrenched upper echelon of characters who sit on a dragon's hoard of gear and chyen that they do very little with it, but on some level I understand why that is; influence in Sindome, unless codedly represented by being part of a faction, is measured in a person's affluence and ability. Further, some character's abilities aren't as easily expressed or as flashy as Johnny Solo grapple snapping every baka who mocks them on pubSIC, so for non-coms especially their entire rep is usually set by how wealthy and geared up they are. To risk that means risking irrelevance, or at least taking a hit, and for those who struggled for a long time to get where they are that is just not appealing.

I'll give credit that I've seen improvement on this especially among the corporate playerbase and I applaud them for it, but it's not where it needs to be. I see very few examples in the Mix of people who have money and ability spreading that around to other players for RP, taking on apprentices or looping in especially immies and lowbies into -paying- schemes and so I would encourage that to change. Even if you consider yourself largely a 'slice of lifer' just ask yourself what does bank balance number really mean in the grand scheme of things? Do you really -need- a third vehicle or could you conceivably take that chyen and funnel it into someone to make art, make trouble or engage with the wider playerbase?

"Either cut some costs of things by a percentage across the board or raise incomes by a percentage."

I was looking for the thread about the economy changes that took place…what? A year ago? Prices were slashed significantly so that people would go out and experiment with new chrome, near gear, etc. I am wondering if this changed anything in any meaningful way. Did the poor get a shot or did the top just get less overhead? Sometimes I will overhear someone check their balance after they rant about being broke and be like wow really?

Progias are much, much cheaper than sic. I suggest using them to replace sic as much as you can.
Looked back through the improvement posts for 2025, we reduced the price of a lot of things by 30-70% while also making more stuff available so they were not hitting rarity. I'm not prepared to further reduce prices at this time.

Many things are at historically low prices while money going into player hands had remained the same or increased.

The game is supposed to be challenging and require effort to get things.

Thanks for the post OP, I think one thing you might be missing in your conception of the game at large is this:

You're in the Mix. You're supposed to be poor and strapped.

If you want lots of cash to drive things, there are IC jobs that you can go after that will pour tons of cash in your pockets: corporate jobs. A lot of your issues disappear with a corporate job. Now, that comes with a whole NEW set of challenges, but hey the game is supposed to be challenging.

The Mix is a jungle. Dog eat dog. And most of those dogs are hungry as fuck by design.

As for interaction with well connected players, I think sometimes you need to sort of manage up. A lot of players that have cash and gear and toys are working with people, but might not even know your character to put them to work. Reach out! Take a big risk, take out a huge loan with a scary PC, get your hooks in the big scary sharks so they understand what you're looking for.

If they don't get the traction you're looking for? Betray them to someone who will!

To add on to this, something that can help with part of the equation is a donation pad. This is certainly not a pay-to-play game, and there are plenty of ways to avoid paying for housing if you look hard enough, but having a donation pad that takes care of rent for a year definitely helps.

Not a have to, but a maybe consider.

It is really exhausting, yeah. I can see this very issue leading a lot to burn out. I'm not here to play a character who's only meaningful objective in the game is purely just to make money. I want to tell a story and engage in roleplay. Sure, earning money can be a part of that story, but as soon as I have to run crates every day just to have any ability to impact the story I'm already burned out.

Edit: I can say from a topside perspective it's not much better. It's super unclear what will or will not be approved for requisitions or reimbursement, even things necessary explicitly foe your role so you're left with either paying out of pocket for everything or sitting around doing nothing.

I will say that re: making money topside, embezzlement (see help embezzlement) and white collar crime is your best friend. Yeah, you're going to be a little stifled if you stick to only bursing what you can and collecting the terminal paycheck… but you don't have to be completely honest about what you're reimbursing, or what it's for, or how much what you're bursing for actually costs. Making money while you're completely on the straight-and-narrow /is/ more difficult, but cooking the books is definitely possible as long as you're willing to take the risk.
Yeah, that's great when reimbursements do get approved, rarely as that seems to be.
Also, tell me why a sticker costs two to three times more than a hotel room for a night?
Think outside the automated income box. Make deals with other players. Sell data, or hell, make up fake data and sell it. Trade services for things you need, money isn't the only currency in this game. There are so many more interesting ways to make flash than simply running crates every day.
I also find this parrot culture incredibly exhausting.
reimbursements are very quick and when it isn't given is obvious why in my experience. i had an npc puppet-request walk me through it and got a lot better at it.

WHO is receiving payment and supplying the good or service
WHAT is purchased
WHEN was it purchased
WHY it relates to your job and benefits your employer
exact cost

from there it's only ever if I'm wrong about the relevance to job.

Pladdicus has it right, that's what you need for reimbursement but I would also add that the WHY is incredibly important. The only times I have faced an IC rejection was when the 'why' was not explained enough or if the Why was not related to the IC job.

So many times I have encountered players who would not bother to resubmit reimbursements even when given a reason that may have, for example, just needed a correction or a slightly more in depth alternative explanation. Not all reasons will get approved if they don't have to do with your fundamental job responsibilities but I have definitely pushed back before on a rejected reimbursement and had them approved. Submitting reimbursements is not difficult, but learning what qualifies is a process (though it doesn't have to be a difficult one)! The post above last it out quite well.

I think you missed the point of the post. It's right there in name thereof.

The economy is exhausting. It's exhausting to spend weeks and months building up your wealth when you can lose it at the drop of a hat. Throughout the entire play experience NOTHING is clear. Nothing is transparent so when it's already exhausting it's really hard to motivate yourself to do anything anyway. There's no consistency, no transparency, and no rationality. That's been what MY play experience has been.

Edit: I don't want to spend all of my play time trying in vein just to earn a tiny amount of money just to lose it because I got distracted for 13 seconds in public. I want to use the cool features and systems and do cool and fun things. I want to engage in a story and have the means in order to do so. There's no reason a sticker should cost the same as a cellphone. There's no reason a phone you buy shouldn't come with all of the basic features already baked into it.

(Edited by BlackSoul at 11:49 pm on 8/24/2026)

As for reimbursements specifically, I *want* to use them to either get the things I need to do fun things in the game, or to fund someone else doing fun things in the game. But instead I'm using it as a gambling system, hoping I can figure out the system works AT ALL. Which, in turn, is exhausting because then it takes weeks or months before you can do fun things at all and if we're not here to do fun things then what am I spending my free time on?
