Stray Bullets
Automated @idea from in-game

@idea from Mcgill

I dunno if this is in the game or not, but I think when you miss someone you are shooting at, the bullet should have a chance of hitting someone else in the room. Heh, I dunno, just a random idea.

I like that idea.. and..

Being able to just shoot a gun into the air would be awesome too.  You could emote it, yes, but it would be cool if it was heard a few rooms away, like gun fire is sometimes.  That would be awesome.  Just shoot the gun into the sky!  Or.. the wall, or anything!

I think you can already do that.  I've seen people do it before anyway... the shooting at nothing thing that is.
I could never figure it out.
Indeed.
yup
Eh...very complex idea, really. The way you describe it's implementation, it could theoretically hit anyone in the room, at random, regardless of their relation (i.e., a stray bullet hitting someone right behind the shooter).
I was thinking that, But what if two people are shooting at each other?
I don't see your point?

Person A shoots at Person B, while Person C stands behind Person A. That ambiguous of a system would let Person A randomly hit Person C.

And what about 2 rooms over? Bullets don't stop at exits.

Yeah, another good point.
So many factors...
I think you should definitly be able to bust your gun off at the sky.  Just to make noise, or show anger, or impress girls.
And then with shooting rounds into the air, what goes up must come down right? To be IC you would need to make it so the round came back down and could still hit somebody, I vote nay on both. If you think about it with the @look and all that, it would be irrational to do it and if I remember right someone posted this a while back. But yeah the way you want it to be implemented, if you want to do it right then you would need to register your @look and all that so that like they said you wouldnt get hit by person A's bullet when you are standing behind them. And if it went a few rooms out, what about fences? A  big gun would go right through it but little ones wouldnt. So logically it would take about three months of coding to do, but yes it would be cool. But the admins have better things to spend there time on.
...huh?
@look...
as in @look_place ?

I'm confused.

Physics are great and all but coding them sucks donkey balls. How about bullets fly in (whatever) direction until hitting a person or a wall. People would be determined by how crowded a certain room would be.

IE You shoot a round in a dark alley, odds are it hits a wall. But if you shoot it in or around a crowded area such as a market random mob 'judy' suddenly falls to the ground screaming in agony.

It'd make firearms alot less discreet. Which isn't really too important because we all know how prone mixers are too running in the direction of the gunfire rather then away from it. ;)

Shit, I hope this makes sense.

Okay, like if your @look_place me is is set to leaning against the wall. Then that isnt descript, but if you  say that you are leaning against a wall to the side of somebody, then chances are slim of you getting hit because either you would have to be an absolute terrible shot for it to miss the guy and bounce off a wall or your just really lucky. So that isnt a teribly good idea, and as for shooting in the air, it is a good idea but since stray bullets come back down and you arent gonna be able to point it straight up in the air. Then it will end up moving about 2 or 3 rooms before it comes down. So I dont like the idea.
To quote Towley:

I got no idea what's goin on.

Theres no way there going to code it so your look_place is checked before bullets hit you.  You know what you could do,,

You could RP getting hit by a stray bullet.  The reason I say there should be a verb for shooting you gun into the air, is because you hear gunfire several rooms away.. So while I -could- RP it, it wouldn't have the same effect.

"You could RP getting hit by a stray bullet"

"So while I -could- RP it, it wouldn't have the same effect"

:Shrugs:

Depends on the fence. If it's a chain-link fence, any damn bullet will go through. Beyond that (like wooden picket fences), just because a firearm has a small calibre doesn't mean it has no penetration. 5.7mm can punch through CRISAT armour at two hundred metres. The shape of the bullet, the length of the barrel firing it and the charge behind it is much more important than the calibre.

you will be able to shoot at all sorts of things once that logic has been written. At that point everything in the MOO will be given hitpoints. So, as you can see, with around 16000 objects, of which I would estimate about 75% need to have hitpoints, we are looking at a lot of work.

So.

Chill.

And wait. It is in the wings. In the mean time, feel free to RP getting hit with stray rounds. Even if it doesn't kill you, you can play it up to all your friends.

*buys the biggest fucking gun he can possibly find*

shoot at patrol cruiser 177

*cackles*Johnny

This sounds great!

Questions:

1) Do you 'attack' the exit and then your firearm is discharged randomly at PCs in the room? (This is what I believe is happening.)

2) Or can you specify one PC in particular, and if so what is the command used? attack in ?

shoot with
well, that failed.

aim at [exit name]

shoot [person you see] with [gun you're holding]

I tried and could not get it to work on 'outdoor' rooms where exits are dynamically generated upon usage, but I am still amped for this change, and doubly so when it works in those additional cases which make up a huge potential battleground for a running gun battle. In fact that's exactly what this enables: running gun battles.

I always felt the 'ultra-low end guns' didn't make a whole lot of sense, but with this change, they sure do. Watch out!!!

Also, some command advice.

Use the command 'stop aiming' before holstering your weapon or doing anything other than shooting people. ^_^

uhhh...Just wanted to comment here even though i'm not the best combat oriented player (read that as horrible, but i try really hard when forced into circumstances- which makes me even worse), and even though i couldn't figure out the syntax (now i know it, thanks for spelling it out Johnny). I think this is working as intended because...BA! I need to up my game. This -really- brings that old saying to true form in Sindome, now: "Who the fuck brings a knife to a gunfight?" but also, i'm going to assume, you reeeeally don't want to get caught by that knife wielding maniac now either?
