NPC Fighters for UMC

UMC NPC Roster: More Opponents, Better Fight Cards
A deeper roster. Closer fights. Rivalries worth watching.

I'm new to Sindome, so I may be missing some history or existing functionality here. However, I keep overhearing that UMC fights can feel pretty one-sided. That got me thinking about how to offer more competitive matchups without depending entirely on which player characters are available and close enough in ability to fight each other.

I know NPC UMC fighters have been suggested before. I'd like to revisit the idea with an emphasis on a persistent roster and player-operated events that don't require an admin to puppet every opponent.

A ROSTER, NOT A DIFFICULTY SLIDER

Introduce a lineup of named NPC fighters ranked from low to high, with established stats and skills. Depending on the player facing them, an opponent could be weaker, roughly equal, or stronger.

These wouldn't automatically scale to match whoever enters the ring, and they wouldn't exist to hand out easy wins. Their different strengths would give the organizer more options for building a competitive fight card, providing an appropriate challenge, or booking an ambitious underdog match.

The goal isn't to replace player-versus-player fights. It's to fill gaps when the available player roster can't provide a suitable matchup.

LET THE ORGANIZER RUN THE CARD

Through RP and staff approval, the player currently responsible for UMC or the gym could receive limited authority over these fighters.

A restricted command list could let that organizer:

  • Call a fighter to the venue.
  • Direct them into the octagon.
  • Assign their scheduled opponent.
  • Start the bout once both fighters are ready.
  • Direct them to leave the ring afterward.

This would be event management, not unrestricted NPC control. It wouldn't give someone an army of hired muscle.

That authority could be granted or revoked through an NPC interaction or admin involvement as the storyline and leadership change. The fighters would remain tied to their event role and venue.

Once the match begins, normal coded combat determines the outcome. The organizer shouldn't be able to change an opponent's stats, force a loss, or otherwise decide who wins.

THINK MIKE TYSON'S PUNCH-OUT!! ON NES

The comparison I have in mind is the lineup in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!: memorable individual opponents, not interchangeable punching bags.

Each fighter could have:

  • A backstory and reason for competing.
  • A persistent win/loss record and ranking.
  • A distinct fighting style, with strengths and weaknesses.
  • Catchphrases, mannerisms, and recognizable quirks.
  • Short entrance, victory, and defeat messages.

You'd recognize the cocky prospect, the stubborn veteran, or the bruiser with a terrible attitude before the first punch landed. Their personalities would be expressed through flavor and RP, while their styles would use Sindome's existing combat system.

Their records would give people something to discuss and bet on. Beating someone who previously knocked you out would mean more than defeating another anonymous NPC.

PUPPETING BECOMES AN OPPORTUNITY, NOT A REQUIREMENT

Basic appearances and bouts could run without live puppeting. But if a rivalry develops, a match gets particularly hyped, or an admin simply wants to jump in and have fun, they could take over that fighter.

Now the familiar opponent can respond to trash talk, give an interview, challenge someone to a rematch, or develop a story beyond the ring.

Staff involvement adds excitement instead of being required for the event to happen at all.

There would obviously need to be safeguards around payouts, repeated easy matchups, and organizer permissions so this doesn't become NPC farming.

Ultimately, I'd like UMC to have a deeper bench: player fighters remain the focus, NPCs help complete the cards, and both can build recognizable histories that make people care about the next fight.

If you don't want to take the time to write something yourself, don't expect us to take the time to read it.

There are plenty of PC fighters interested in participating, we don't need to fill the ranks with more NPCs.
