Town Hall: Self-Sufficent RP

What follows is my log of the Sindome Town Hall Meeting hosted on Nov 13th. The only modifications have been to remove the general amount of admin-only spam that follows across my scroll. When commenting on portions of this log, please DO NOT quote the entire thing. Copy and paste -a small portion- that is just what you are commenting on. Once again, thanks to all that participated then and those that post now.

Iga says loudly, "All right, next topic is: Ways in which players can enable themselves within the game, without the direct need of administrative or GM help. (Getting started as a cyberpunk 101) Ways to combat player apathy, and ways -PLAYERS- can activate the Sindome experiance."
Jinkorei retracts his raise
Morphix hauls himself to his feet, rubbing his eyes.
Kevlar raises his hand.
Lucas raises his hand.
Navarre raises her hand.
Morphix sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga [to Kevlar]: your up
Kevlar gets up from the Bleachers.
[OOC: Allandra takes a moment to wave a good by to everyone as it is his bedtime.]
Gitzo raises its hand
Allandra's body goes limp as she slumps to the ground unconscious.
[OOC: Ratchet heads out as well, "Thanks for lettin' me be a part."]
Kevlar says loudly, "At the risk of tooting my own horn just a bit, I wrote a very advanced, very simple scripting system which allows players to contribute to the code base in very meaningful ways. But it's VERY rarely used. "
Kevlar asks loudly, "What are the barriers preventing you from getting involved in contributing? Are you not interested? Is it too hard? Am I wasting my breath with all this documentation on how to use it, which as far as I can tell people respond very well to, but then never make much of?"
Kevlar says loudly, "Comments, online, offline, and annonymously are appreaciated."
Kevlar sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Kevlar.
Iga [to Lucas]: your up
Lucas gets up from the Bleachers.
Lucas says, "It's kind of cheesy, but what about like a tutor thing...find a way to set up an RP'd IC RP or CP tutor, or just someone to contact ooc about things like commands, someone to get you in the RP mood, I was lucky to have IRL friends playing the game when I started, and cariing vet players Like nic, who paid players to more or less RP, people new to SD can have a crutch to enjoy their experiance, instead of live or die.  I h ae noticed more sleepers and bodies than ever.  I mean PC bodies, but I've been mugged while sleeping a few times, and not killed once.  So people are coming just nto stying, I think we need more or a communtity feeling."
Lucas says, "I'd be the first to volunteer for t he Withmore Big Brother big sister program"
Lucas says, "All I got"
Lucas sits down on the Bleachers.
Kevlar nods to Lucas.
Iga nods to Lucas.
Iga [to Navarre]: your up
Navarre nods to Iga.
Navarre gets up from the Bleachers.
Navarre says, "I really liked the point Lucas just made."
The Grande Amphitheatre
The space you stand in is a massive dome, the ceiling so high up it is obscured in utter darkness. From those inky depths neon lighting flashes down around you, the digital ether filled with the glow of neon blue and argon green laser light that flashes and draws holo ads across the wide, disturbingly blank walls around you. The large space has a vaguely colosseum shape to it, a loose oval that at times feels over a half mile wide. Terraced rows of large, comfortable seats spiral down from the inky heights above you, sloping slowly towards a central dais that floats above a small empty circle only 20 feet in diameter. The stage hovers over 50 feet in the air, wires, cables, and electronic lighting dangling from it's underbelly. The space looks like it could hold hundreds of thousands of people comfortably, even though only a fraction of that is in use. Figures flicker and phase in and out in the stands, occasionally holding cohesion long enough to be recognized as the ghosts from events long past. A member of Baby-Smashers here, Lucifer there, and any number of the faceless masses that surround you on a daily basis. Suspended from above is a massive holographic display, that has the words 'LOOK AT THE SIGN' scrolling across it over and over.
You, Chipp, Silvan, McClure, Timmy, Seven, Ratchet, Miranda, Ari, Lillith, Trancer, Morphix and Lucas are sitting in the bleachers, watching.
You see a Sign.
Retarded Iga is moderating tonights event  Navarre is standing here, her slender gloved fingers tapping out a rythm against her thigh as she moves slightly in time to the music audible through her headphones.  Richard, Aikon, Allandra and Marcus are sleeping here.
There are no visible exits.
Morphix nods.
Ari raises his hand.
Ari nods.
Navarre says, "As for my comment..um. I'm really still a new character and player, and would hardly claim to be 'cp' enough sometimes...but I'm most definitely hooked on this world and this genre. As a really REALLY new character I didn't have the same addiction, and here's why..."
Navarre holds her chest and coughs.
Ratchet's body goes limp as he slumps to the ground unconscious.
Navarre says, "without knowing what to draw on - gibson's works, certain parts of the world around me - its her um hard to get into the game"
Johnny raises his hand.
Navarre says, "but once you do, if you can offer a solid character and just toss them into the world, there's an infinite4 amount of rp you g can generate"
Navarre says, "..anddd im done."
Navarre sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Navarre.
Iga [to Gitzo]: your up
Gitzo gets up from the Bleachers.
Gitzo says loudly, "I think solo RP should be encouraged and rewarded. Players need to feel that they can affect the world around them in less tangible ways then PC to PC interaction and still be enjoyable. "
Gitzo says loudly, "Players need to get a feel of the IC world through interacting with it and how their character would interact with it. That helped me a LOT and Still does. "
Gitzo says loudly, "I guess treating the IC world like a story they can evolve and not just see it as a sotry that their character iss being dragged through it. Players can enjoy spoofing situations. Treat it like writing a story. Within boundaries of the IC world. "
Gitzo says loudly, "uh,.. yeah."
Gitzo sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods.
Ari nods.
Iga [to Ari]: your up
Iga raises a hand.
Ari says loudly, "Just real quick, I agree 110% with Gitzo."
Ari says loudly, "To take a quote from Bagger Vance: 'Its a game that can't be won, only played.' The players and the admin MAKE the world, its through our eyes that we see it."
Ari says loudly, "At the same time... I like what Lucas said, kinda like my Newbie Team idea from earlier. Both Navarre and Lucas came up with it and they weren't here... maybe its an idea to look into? "
Ari nods.
Ari does that really cool sitting while already sitting thing again.
Iga nods.
Iga [to You]: your up
You say, "The information on what to draw on for the cyberpunk world is on the website."
You say, "The 'Media Resources' page, if I remember correctly."
You say, "thats all."
Iga nods.
Iga says loudly, "I have a comment."
Morphix [to Kevlar]: say what?
Iga says loudly, "What I want to know is why players are not activationg in the game world? Why is it that they sit in cubes, hotels, and appartments, then bitch that nothing is happening? What is it as staff that we can do to help this -APATHY- go away, and is there anything we can do? Frankly, I think that the -PLAYERS- need to work a hell of a lot harder a hell of a lot more. I can only hold my hand out, you have to take it."
Iga says loudly, "Any other comments? :)"
Lucas says, "Yea"
Lucas rasies his hand.
Iga [to Lucas]: you have the floor. :)
Lucas gets up from the Bleachers.
Lucas says, "Just to answer  your question you have to make the people care.  It is exactly what your saying.  I know.  It's a paradox, with out RP people won't care, but without caring we can't have rp?  Chicken?  Egg?  I don't know.  Something has to change, the flare and passion has left the game. I dunno why.  It's not the matrix or cool gadgets"
Lucas says, "It could be the players or admin.  I don't think the problem is the people in the cubes, but who is there and why.  Are people afraid to RP?  Or RP poorly?  DO we need RP workshops?  Cause I'd attend one."
Lucas says, "Done again"
Lucas sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Lucas.
Iga asks loudly, "Any other comments?"
Kevlar nods.
Kevlar says loudly, "Yeah"
Johnny raises his hand.
Iga exclaims loudly, "Hands up to que people!"
[Janita] Leonilda walks in from the east.
Kevlar raises his hand.
[Janita] Leonilda goes south.
Iga [to You]: you first
You stand up.
Iga smiles at Kevlar.
You exclaim, "Hey look, I stood up too!"
You hold your chest and cough.
Ari raises his hand.
Morphix raise hand
You say, "When you joined Sindome, what did you expect from it? Did you expect us to come up with the things that make you want to leave your cube? You'll get the best results by being a self-starter. Interacting with each other is where its at, not the NPCs."
You sit down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to you.
Iga [to Kevlar]: your up
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* 10 minute warning on this topic.*end transmission*
Miranda looks tired and yawns.
Kevlar gets up from the Bleachers.
Kevlar says loudly, "I just wanted to say that Lucas made a very interesting point."
Kevlar says loudly, "I find the concept of a RP workshop facinating, and one that I would be interested in persuing."
Kevlar says loudly, "I'de also like to give props to Lucas for being the first to voulenteer to attend."
Kevlar [to Lucas]: Right on man.
Kevlar sits down on the Bleachers.
Lucas blushesses.
Iga nods to Kevlar.
Iga [to Ari]: your up mr. long post. :)
Ari says loudly, "Working on it, uno momento."
Ari says loudly, "Or is it memento... "
Ari shrugs.
Ari winks.
Chipp grins.
Kevlar says loudly, "Momento."
Timmy raises his hand.
Gitzo nods.
Ari says loudly, "Lucas has a very valid point. Some part of the 'flare' has gone out of the game. I personally have sat around alot, mostly for RL issues... but now I'm back. The game grows on you when you've been around as long as I have... and now I don't want to leave. I fully see myself playing FAR into the future. But thats because I get out and cause RP to happen. Get rumors floating, buy and sell information, get people to turn on each other... and if you can, make them turn to you. Take any situation, good or bad, and RP it somehow to your benefit. -THAT- is CP. I agree completely... RP that GMs put up should be a BONUS to us... we should run the story of the city. NPCs should be there to add to the flavor of the game. If you aren't a player in the story, you are being played. Plain and simple. I'm tired of watching everyone get played... if someone is going around killing everyone, end it. That causes WAY more problems than anyone thinks. So band together, end it. THAT is a TON of RP. Hours and hours of it... even little stuff like coffee or drinks... it can go a long way."
Ari [to Kevlar]: It was a joke, silly. ;)
Navarre falls asleep on Miranda's shoulder.
Ari says loudly, "I'm out though, folks. G'night, and thanks to everyone for being here and ponderng."
Ari says loudly, "Big thanks to Iga, (Awesome Job), Jink, and everyone else."
Ari bows gracefully.
Iga nods to Ari.
Iga [to Ari]: danke. done?
Miranda smiles at Navarre.
Ari nods.
Ari sits without standing and sitting again.
Iga [to Morphix]: your up
Morphix says, "I agree with Lucas but also see Johnny's pt. From my experience so far, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot going on. There are a few characters lurking about but thats it. The only real interaction I had was with Seven. Aftter that, I liked the game even more. Before that I was just checking it out, didn't seem that interesting, concept was, but not playing. I think a RP workshop or something to that effect would be a great idea. I know that I would be there in a heartbeat. I know that I am new and my opinions probably don't count a whole lot compared to the people who have been here a while. But I'm just giving my input."
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* Morph, then Timmy, then this topic is done.*end transmission*
Morphix gets up from the Bleachers.
Morphix says, "sorry"
Chipp gets up from the Bleachers.
Chipp waves.
Chipp's body goes limp as he slumps to the ground unconscious.
Morphix sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Morphix.
Seven nods to Morphix.
Iga [to Timmy]: fire away mano!
Timmy gets up from the Bleachers.

Retarded Iga is moderating tonights event  Timmy is standing here.  Chipp, Richard, Aikon, Allandra, Marcus and Ratchet are sleeping here.
There are no visible exits.
Morphix nods.
Timmy says, "I would like to say...."
Timmy says, "that I have forgotten what I would like to say."
Timmy frowns.
Timmy sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga laughs.
Miranda gets out her TruColorz dildo.
You think . o O ( having this many people actually logged on would be an excellent start to lots of RP )
Seven laughs.
Miranda raises an eyebrow curiously.
Miranda puts her TruColorz dildo away.
Timmy shrugs at Miranda.
Navarre drools on Miranda's shoulder in her sleep.
Morphix chuckles
Iga says loudly, "At this point, I would like to stop and take a vote. We are at the alloted time limit for the meeting, and still have 4 topics to go. Who would like to stop tonight and continue at a later date? Hands please."
Miranda nudges nava to wake and vote.
Navarre wakes up and raises her hand.
Lillith raises her hand.
I don't understand that.
Johnny raises a hand.
Morphix raises his hand.
Miranda raises a hand.
Trancer raises his hand, noting it's midnight and he has class in the morning.
Lucas asks, "Raisin for what?"
Gitzo raises its hand
Timmy raises his hand.
Lucas asks, "Another night?"
Kevlar raises his hand
Trancer says loudly, "But I'd like to make a quick comment before everyone leaves."
Iga [to Lucas]: to stop the meeting tonight till later.
Seven raises his hand.
Lucas raises his hand.
Miranda slides her arms into the leather coat and pulls it up onto her shoulders.
Iga asks loudly, "Okay, that is the majority I belive. Who wants to keep going?"
Kevlar puts his hand down.
Jinkorei abstains
Seven puts his hand down.
Lucas lowerses hand.
Timmy shrugs.
Navarre hides.
Iga chuckles.
Morphix lowers hand.
Miranda lowers 2 hands.
Kevlar says loudly, "The aye's have it."
Iga says loudly, "I'll take that as we should end."
Iga [to Trancer]: your last comment sir?
Miranda shouts, "AYE"
Trancer nods to Iga.
Trancer gets up from the Bleachers.
[OOC: Silvan says, "Later all"]
Silvan's body goes limp as he slumps to the ground unconscious.
Navarre waves at Silvan.
Silvan has been removed from the IC world by admin. Please 'xhelp' if this requires an explanation.
Trancer says loudly, "I'd just like to say that it's been a very, very, -very- long time since I've felt things around here were really kicking ass, or about to start. More things are going on than people really know, but regardless. Looking at @who right now reminds me of the days when I started here, and things were, as we affectionally call them, like "the good old days". But I think it's great to see so many people at the meeting, sitting through these 3 hours because we all desire change. I'm damn excited about where things are going to go. I hope everyone else is a little inspired too."
Trancer coughs and sits back down from his cheesy rant.
Trancer sits down on the Bleachers.
Kevlar says loudly, "I can't wait, I gotta get back to what I'm doing. You all ROCK. Thank you SO MUCH for attending. I feel this was EXTREMELY productive, and I for one learned a lot, and have renewed energy in making a change for the better."
Kevlar says loudly, "This has made a real difference for me. I hope I'm not alone here."
Jinkorei gets up from the Bleachers.
Lillith nods.
You stand up.
Kevlar gets up from the Bleachers.
Morphix gets up from Bleachers and stretches.
Miranda gets up from the Bleachers.
Seven gets up from the Bleachers.
Seven brings both arms behind his back, and presses his closed fists, knuckles first into the small of his back.  You hear a couple low cracks, and he stops, satisfied.
Seven smiles and says, "Ahh... Thats better."
I don't understand that.
You applaud to Iga.
Jinkorei says loudly, "Yes, thank you -all- for being here, as doing so shows you care enough to be ...."
Kevlar applauds Iga.
Lillith gets up from the Bleachers.
Jinkorei says loudly, "Sindomanian."
Seven applauds.
You applaud to Iga.
Jinkorei grins
Gitzo gets up from the Bleachers.
Trancer cheers.

You see a Sign.
Retarded Iga is moderating tonights event  Kevlar is snoring loudly.  Gitzo is standing here.  Seven is standing here.  Jinkorei TheArtificialGhost(tm) is a swirling mass of -OOC- pixels.  Miranda is looking quite different than the last time you saw her, to the point of being unrecognizeable. She carries her form under an oversized leather coat which hides all her features.  Lillith is standing here, with a slightly dizy look.  Chipp, Richard, Aikon, Allandra, Marcus and Ratchet are sleeping here.
There are no visible exits.
Iga flutters into the air and fly about, cawing at the people down below.
Miranda pokes Navarre in the ribs.
McClure standses and stretches.
You say, "just say the word and you'll be moved where you came from"
Iga . o O ( must...contain...Iga-brand (tm) crazyness....must....contain... )
Trancer exclaims loudly, "The word!"
You say, "otherwise, feel free to chat and shit"
Navarre gnaws on Miranda's shoulder.
Gitzo says loudly, "ew. messy."
Morphix [to Kevlar]: got a sec?
Jinkorei grins mischievously.
Navarre blinks in suprise.
Miranda [to Navarre]: tasty?
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* just so you all know, you -did- earn UE while in the meeting. :) *end transmission*
Lillith raises her hand, "Word man."
Seven laughs.
Navarre backs slowly away from Miranda, glancing around. "Ummm..what? No, nothing..er.."
Timmy calls out, hey, someone said there would be refreshments!  where?
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* and that iga brat ate all the cheese and pickles. take it up with him on the lack of food!*end transmission*
You [to Timmy]: The pizza guy hasn't gotten to my house yet.
Morphix looks around fevorishl.
Miranda grabs nava up and locks her in a playful head lock.
Navarre yelps, kicking and thrashing.
Miranda frees a hand to poke nava in the ribs again.
You eye your surroundings.

ok so unfortunately I had to leave before this topic came up, and I think johnny's thought hit the nail on the head there is usually less than 10 people logged in at any given moment, almost always less than 15.  now if you think about this for a second let's go with the 15 which as we all know is usually not there if 4 of them are admin, 3 are logged in just to idle, that leaves 8 well if 3 are corpies and 5 are mixers and 1 and 2 of those is logged in just to work, (bruce runs, or other quick mundane tasks that get us c, or teksoft, or judging or whatever for the corpie)  you see where I'm going with this... you end up sitting un the drome downing drinks with one other person turying to come up with some shit to do...  I started a post about when people log in to try to imply something as well as just find out (check anything really).

Nic has a plan started up.... come to fuckin fight nights
and hang around afterword to rp

oh yueah and the rp workshop... I have a decently extensive rp background, 16 years at least, and many games (D&D,  AD&D, rifts, vampire the masquerade, rifts, shadowrun, marvel superheroes, just to name a few)  and I still find my rp stagnent in many situations so I's definately attend.

An RP workshop would definately be interesting.  I think I would attend as well.  As for player-sustained RP, I've been DESPERATELY trying to get some more money flowing into the SD economy.  Its kind of a losing battle, however, as its very time-consuming to get the money to DO this with, and personally I don't really enjoy doing it at all (and I think some admin might question my methods of getting it as well, as its a purely coded solution..  even though it leads to me interacting and paying other players for services).  Anyway, I sincerely hope that my actions of gaining this money are acceptable.  However, its the only way I could think of to be able to do what I'm TRYING to do.  Anyway..  that was basically just a rant for the admin, I guess..

Anyway, the RP workshop is a great idea!  I don't think that NPCs are much of a solution, though.  I think that money is probably one of the main RP-generators (as it probably should be in a CP society), and therefore should be a bit easier to get..  That's pretty much what I'm trying to do (and I think its what Nic is trying to do as well..  and maybe a few others that I don't know about).

Anywho, that's my rant.  Everyone else pretty much stated what needed to be said.

And I'll give props again to Lucas for that suggestion. An RP workshop is a facinating idea, and one that I'm persuing.

I reconize I'm not the end-all-be-all when it comes to RP, and RP styles, but I do have a large background in RP'ing (live and on here and elsemoo as a char), GM'ing (Shadowrun), puppeting (here and elsemoo), and most importantly, collecting information from other people and merging it into a collaberation, and I know many good RP'ers personally.

So if I drag you OOC while your sitting in your cube doing nothing and start asking you questions about RP, please forgive my noseyness.

-Kevlar

Sigh....consider me re-inspired to go do something other than what I was planning to do, which largely involved sitting around and waiting to earn some UE before I could do something interesting.
